WE ARE OUR ROOTS
Premiere: Aug 28, 2025 - Castello di Melfi, Melfi (PZ) - Artfest
Carried by the ethereal, hypnotic sound of the handpan — one of the newest instruments ever created — the piece follows its performer along a path made of departures, arrivals and returns. A route that unfolds through trajectories at once linear and intricate, traced by invisible lines connecting the musician’s body, his shifting positions and the geometry of the surrounding space. In this fragmented environment, the performer sets out on a symbolic journey towards the construction of her own identity.
At the heart of the choreography lies the theme of roots, understood as the inheritance we come from. Roots are not only what has shaped us, but also what points us in the direction we are to take. Knowing where we come from can help us understand where we are going, offering a compass in moments of uncertainty. And yet not everything our roots hand down to us is necessarily good or useful.
What do we keep, and what do we let go of along the way?
To value one’s origins does not mean blindly accepting everything that belongs to us. It means, rather, learning to recognise and choose what is good in them, aware that the less admirable parts are themselves part of a lesson in living. Looking at one’s roots becomes, in this way, an inward journey towards a deeper knowledge of oneself.
The itinerary — short or long, easy or arduous — will lead us to discover that we are our roots, wherever life may take us.
